So, obviously, I was very excited to read Cleopatra’s Shadows. It isn’t that the book wasn’t well-written; it was, and I am sure, as Holleman is a historical scholar, it was undoubtedly incredibly well-researched. What was disappointing to me was that Holleman didn’t give either sister agency. The Drowning King by Emily Holleman is the second book in A Fall of Egypt series. This book can be read as a stand alone novel or as a sequel to Cleopatras Shadows. This book tells of the reign of Cleopatra and her brother Potolomey, her coruler/5.

Get this from a library! Cleopatra's shadows: a novel. [Emily Holleman] -- A novel that reimagines the beginnings of Cleopatra's epic saga follows her younger sister, Arsinoe, as she escapes the palace after her half-sister Berenice seizes the throne while their father.   Depictions of brutality mix with those of opulence in this beautifully written book which focuses on the lives of Cleopatra’s shadows – her sisters - rather than the famous queen herself. Descriptions of the palace with its eunuchs, slaves and guards contrast with the poverty on the streets of a crumbling Thebes where the people starve from.
